Square tube specifications and dimensions

The specifications of square tubes are mainly indicated by the side width * side width * wall thickness. For example, 16×16×0.4~1.5 indicates a side width of 16mm and a wall thickness of 0.4-1.5mm.

Square tube classification

Classified by manufacturing process: hot-rolled seamless square tubes, cold-drawn seamless square tubes, extruded seamless square tubes, and welded square tubes.

Classified by material: ordinary carbon steel square tubes and low-alloy steel square tubes. Ordinary carbon steel includes: Q195, Q215, Q235, SS400, 20# steel, 45# steel, etc.; low-alloy steel includes Q345, 16Mn, Q390, ST52-3, etc.

Classification by cross-sectional shape: (1) Simple cross-section square tubes – square tubes, rectangular tubes (2) Complex cross-section square tubes – flower-shaped square tubes, open-section square tubes, corrugated square tubes, irregularly shaped square tubes

Classified by surface treatment: hot-dip galvanized square tubes, electro-galvanized square tubes, oiled square tubes, pickled square tubes.

Classified by application: square tubes for decoration, square tubes for machine tools and equipment, square tubes for the mechanical industry, square tubes for the chemical industry, square tubes for steel structures, square tubes for shipbuilding, square tubes for automobiles, square tubes for steel beams and columns, and square tubes for special purposes.

Classified by wall thickness: extra-thick-walled square tubes, thick-walled square tubes, and thin-walled square tubes.

Square tube weight calculation

Square tube weight calculation formula: Weight = {(Length - Wall thickness) × 2 ÷ 1000 + (Width - Wall thickness) × 2 ÷ 1000} × 7.85 × Wall thickness × Length. Theoretical weights for common specifications are shown in the table below.

Note: The unit above is kg/m, where wall thickness and side length are in millimeters (mm).

Applications of Square Steel Tubing

Square steel tubing is widely used in construction, machinery manufacturing, steel construction, and other projects.  It is also extensively used in shipbuilding, solar power generation brackets, steel structures, power engineering, power plants, agricultural and chemical machinery, glass curtain walls, automobile chassis, airports, boiler construction, highway guardrails, building construction, pressure vessels, oil storage tanks, bridges, power station equipment, lifting and transportation machinery, and other welded structural components subjected to high loads.
